All of the Buñuel films I have seen so far have featured the theme of thwarted desire. You can trace it all the way back to L'Âge d'Or in 1930, which dealt with the theme surrealistically and humorously. In the case of That Obscure Object of Desire, however, the bitterness that is associated with such a theme is on fuller display than his previous works.
